Jean the Fearless

Jean the Fearless
(1371-1419) (Jean Sans Peur)
   nobility
Born in Dijon, Jean the Fearless, duke of Burgundy was the son of philip II the bold and Marguerite de Mâle. During the incapacity of charles vi, he disputed the power of louis d'orléans and had him assassinated (1407), provoking the civil war between the Armagnacs and the Burgundians. Leader of the Burgundians, Jean was supported by the sorbonne and a faction of the bourgeoisie, but he was unable to channel the movement into a force and was driven from Paris (1413). He allied himself with the English, then tried to reconcile with the dauphin (the future charles vii), but was assassinated during their meeting at the bridge at Montereau by one of the dauphin's supporters. Jean the Fearless was the father of philip III the good.
